Tell Citi: Stop Financing Fossil Fuel Expansion

As extreme weather intensified by climate change devastates communities around the world, it's urgent that we stop burning fossil fuels and transition to a clean energy system. Yet Big Banks continue to finance new fossil fuel operations, worsening the climate crisis and environmental injustices.

Write today and tell Citi leaders to stop enabling the harms of the fossil fuel industry.

According to the 2024 Banking on Climate Chaos report, Citi is the second-largest financier of fossil fuels and the largest financier of fossil fuel expansion since the Paris climate agreement, having poured $396 billion into the industry since 2016. In 2024, along with other large US banks, it exited the Net Zero Banking Alliance convened by the United Nations, calling further into question its commitment to cooperating across the finance sector towards key climate goals. It is unacceptable that Citi and other Big Banks continue to profit from business with the fossil fuel industry as people around the world face deadly climate disasters and future projections grow increasingly dire.

In the summer of 2024, activists with the Summer of Heat on Wall Street engaged in a sustained campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience to demand that Citi take the climate crisis seriously. Let's keep the pressure on.

I am writing to urge Citi to stop financing fossil fuel expansion, respect human rights and Indigenous sovereignty, and redirect financing to renewable energy.

The world is in crisis, as the impacts of human-caused climate change continue to worsen. Hurricanes, heatwaves, wildfires, and other disasters that can be scientifically linked to climate change continue to harm lives, economies, and ecosystems around the world. Just 122 high-polluting companies account for 72 percent of the world’s carbon emissions.  By continuing to do business with oil and gas companies, Citi is exacerbating human suffering around the world.

The fossil fuel industry drives environmental racism and violations of Indigenous rights in the areas where it carries out operations. For example, a recent report outlines ways that Citi’s funding of gas terminals in the Gulf South contributes to negative health impacts that primarily harm low-income communities of color: https://fossilfreeciti.org/2024/09/18/report-enviro-racism. It is unacceptable that Citi supports industrial projects that fail to protect the health and lives of local community members.

In June 2024 more than 750 scientists wrote to Citi outlining the scientific consensus that climate impacts will be significantly worse if we do not make deep, rapid cuts to heat-trapping emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and pursue a just transition to a clean energy system: https://ucs-documents.s3.amazonaws.com/global-warming/Scientists-Letter-to-Citi-june-2024.pdf.

The solutions that we need are in reach—our future depends on bold action by all sectors to address the climate crisis with the scale and urgency it calls for. I urge Citi to take meaningful action on climate before it is too late.
